Youth Leaders of Promise

Picture
The Youth Leaders of Promise (YLOP) program was developed by the Center for Ethical Leadership in the early 1990s as part of a grant from the W.K. Kellogg Foundation to train citizens in a model of ethical leadership aimed at promoting the common good.  The YLOP program was conducted for four years as a summer program that brought together young people from diverse neighborhoods and cities in the Seattle area, for a common experience in leadership development, team building, and community project work.

YLOP is a powerful way to help youth discover their true potential and integrate more fully with their communities. Youth Leaders of Promise is an empowering leadership learning laboratory that develops in youth the habits of ethical leadership, citizenship, service, and the ability to think and act for the common good.

The YLOP (YLOP - pronounced WhyLop - an acronym given by the first class in 1991) program has changed many lives in powerful ways. In its twelve-years, YLOP has spawned lasting lessons of confidence and hope in nearly 1,000 youth participants. The Youth's hands-on involvement in their communities and shaping their own futures makes an enduring, often dramatic, impact on how the young people see themselves and develop into adulthood. YLOP focuses on developing leadership capacity, touching the hearts of youth, encouraging them to live and act from their values, and feeling empowered to make the world a better place.

The program subsequently was conducted as a semester-long class for sophomores within Seattle area high schools including Nathan Hale, Cleveland and Franklin. The Center provided the curriculum, lesson plans and the training to teachers to enable them to conduct the class. The program ended when schools were pushed to focus teaching and classroom time to elements that were on standardized tests only.

The YLOP Curriculum is available for schools and educators. Contact the Center for more information.
