Gracious Space has helped over 15,000 people in 30 states and 45 countries to work better together around critical issues. The Center has created and used Gracious Space in many sectors, including health care, business, government, community, nonprofit, and schools. It helps create the space, both literally and figuratively, to allow all people to bring their “best stuff” to conversations, relationships, and the workplace in a non-critical, open-minded environment. The principles of Gracious Space shape environments (within and outside of ourselves) that encourage integrity, honesty, trust, deep listening, and continuous learning. This session provides a framework for creating a setting conducive to honoring diverse and dissenting opinions, as well as learning in public.

Most groups are made up of well-meaning people who nevertheless find themselves in situations of conflict with others. Whether the project is a leadership development program, community initiative, difficult conversation on race, a reorganization, performance appraisal, coaching conversation, new vision, mission or strategic plan, a new team, or mediation – Gracious Space can make the relationships stronger and the work flow more creatively. This session dives deeper into the tools to build trust, foster risk-tasking, and learn in public.

Gracious Space: a spirit and a setting where we invite the stranger and learn in public.

Adapting the four elements of GS (spirit, setting, invite the stranger, and learning in public) to the unique cultural patterns of our communities requires creativity, playfulness and persistence.

This Community of Practice is here to support practitioners by connecting them to each other, and to provide resources as we shepherd our communities toward a more healthy, just, and inclusive future.

"In a world stretched to the limits of viability by divisive "us-them" thinking, we need a worldview founded upon a greater truth: the unity of humankind and the wholeness of the planet." -- Cover from Sharing the Rock

This leadership model does just that! The seven practices of leadership for the common good expands from our 4-V Model, a model of ethical leadership development that is grounded in theories of moral development, human development, leadership development, and community development. It takes participants through a journey of values-based leadership and identify how engaging the disenfranchised can help envision what could be. Co-creating gracious space to work together with diverse perspectives to develop creative solutions. Participants claim their voice, receive hope and act with moral courage to steward the necessary changes for the good of all.

"I highly recommend CEL's Stewards program to anyone who agrees that pursuit of the common good is a worthwhile leadership endeavor, and who is also motivated to actively engage toward that end." -- Joe Hailey, CEL Volunteer
*We offer scholarships on a sliding scale. Please contact us.
