2026 Leadership Legacy Award Recipient
This year's theme: Inviting the “Stranger” to Co-create Sustainable Change, calls on leaders to invite people who share different perspectives to co-create sustainable change. The Leadership Legacy Award celebrates leaders whose vision, commitment and unceasing efforts are significantly advancing social, environmental, and economic justice.
CEL recognizes Kenneth Schulman as this year's recipient of the Bill Grace Leadership Legacy Award for his approach to cross real and perceived boundaries by engaging the “Stranger” to co-create sustainable change by passing three cutting-edge civil rights ordinances that expanded protections for LGBTQ+ people in employment, housing, and public accommodations in the 90’s. Ethics and striving for a better world are the foundation of Ken’s leadership approach. Ken has led the Lambert House LGBTQ+ Youth Center since 2003 as its Executive Director.
About Kenneth Shulman:
Ken attended the Ethical Culture Fieldston School in New York City from pre-kindergarten through high school, where ethics curricula were woven into every subject in addition to Ethics coursework at every grade level. He holds a Bachelor’s in Communication for Social Change from The Evergreen State College and a Master’s in Public Administration from Harvard. Ethics and striving for a better world are the foundation of Ken’s leadership and accomplishments.
Ken’s work to create a better world began at the age of 14 when he attended anti-Vietnam War artists’ strategy meetings and massive demonstrations in New York’s Central Park. He has worked on a wide variety of causes including environmental issues, ending violence against women, opposing apartheid, championing LGBTQ+ issues, and more. Beginning in the 1970s, Ken founded a number of groups including food buying clubs, a Gay Men’s Theatre Collective, an outdoor education program for juvenile justice diversion clients, an LGBTQ+ participatory folk dance group, and LGBTQ+ peer counseling courses and support groups. In the 1990s as an appointee of Seattle Mayors Rice and Schell, and as a 6-year member, and 2-time Co-Chair, of the City of Seattle’s LGBTQ Commission, Ken successfully proposed and championed three cutting-edge civil rights ordinances that expanded protections for LGBTQ+ people in employment, housing, and public accommodations. He also secured 12 funding allocations for LGBTQ+ community programs that had never before received public funding. Ken has led the Lambert House LGBTQ+ Youth Center since 2003 as its Executive Director.
