Leadership in a Self-Organizing World

Article by Steve Stapleton for the May 2009 newsletter describing the LSOW event in May.

At the Center for Ethical Leadership, we are always seeking to be in service of people and organizations who want to create change for the common good.  We inspire, cultivate, and support leaders and change agents at many stages of their journeys.  This work provides us with many opportunities to convene groups of passionate people in Gracious Space, in order to catalyze their change efforts and enhance their leadership ability.

The most recent convening took place May 14-17, 2009, when the Center, along with its partners, hosted a 3-day gathering to delve into the question, "What is Leadership in a Self-Organizing World?"  Over 90 participants, from 13 states and 5 different countries, came to be a part of this conference.  The participants brought an amazing array of gifts and talents with them to share with the rest of the group: music, poetry,  visual and performing arts, singing, laughing, and crying.

We were also very fortunate to have Harrison Owen, author and creator of Open Space Technology, with us during the entire 3-day gathering.  Every morning, Harrison provided some thoughtful insights from his experiences to help focus the intent of the day. Then participants used Open Space Technology to self-organize conversations around topics that were of particular interest to them.  Notes to many of the different conversations can be found here.

The introduction to Harrison Owen's most recent book, Wave Rider: Leadership for High Performance in a Self Organizing World, can be found here
