2009 Legacy Event

Article by Melissa Hamasaki about the 2009 Legacy Event.

This past March, CEL celebrated the fourth annual Bill J. Grace Leadership Legacy Award recipients. Milenko Matanovic, Mark Okazaki and Jon Ramer were honored in recognition of their efforts to improve the common good in the Puget Sound region.  This year’s Legacy Event was held at the Ocean City Restaurant in the International District.

Milenko Matanovic is the Executive Director of the Pomegranate Center. Pomegranate is a non-profit organization that brings artists and communities together to create public gatherig spaces. Residents are included in the planning of each project, so the needs and desires of the community are directly met at each step of the planning. Milenko’s nominator wrote, “Pomegranate Center offers communities what they are starved for, but don't always know it.”

Mark Okazaki is the Executive Director of Neighborhood House. Neighborhood House is a non-profit organization that ensures local residents have access to the resources they need to accomplish their dreams. Mark’s nominator noted, “…[H]e chooses to work in groups, and applies his considerable skills in order to move the common agenda forward … demonstrating that his own agenda and vision is larger than just one organization.”

Jon Ramer is the co-founder and Executive Director of the Interra Project. Interra strives to encourage consumers to shop and support socially and economically responsible businesses in their communities. Jon brings his enormous gifts in linking people together in all his endeavors, and as his nominator shared, “Jon models collective leadership in everything he does. He unfailingly thanks others when there is success.”

The Center for Ethical Leadership once again congratulates the 2009 Leadership Legacy Award winners. All three honorees exemplify service to the community and make our region a better place to live.
